Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate rollers/compactors in an underground mining environment.This unit applies to those working in site-based roles.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying this unit.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Plan and prepare for underground roller/compactor operations
  • Access, interpret and apply mobile plant and equipment documentation
  • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess the risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies
  • Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • Select required roller/compactor equipment and confirm suitability for work activities
  • Inspect and assess site conditions, determine if scaling is required and take action according to workplace procedures
  • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures for roller/compactor, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies
  • Identify and use dust suppression and extraction methods according to workplace procedures
  • Check work area is well ventilated before entry
  • Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity
       
Element: Operate roller/compactor underground in line with established requirements to complete work activity
  • Carry out prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures
  • Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures
  • Drive and operate roller/compactor using techniques suited to equipment capabilities, site and work conditions, and according to workplace procedures
  • Engage and disengage the compacting device
  • Identify, remove and manage contaminants
  • Monitor and manage equipment performance using appropriate indicators and alarms, and ensure efficiency of operations
  • Compact to required degree of compaction in line with job requirements and safe work practices
  • Monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety to self, others, plant and equipment
  • Park up, shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures

  • Clear work area and dispose or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
  • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues according to workplace requirements
  • Manage/report hazards to maintain a safe working environment
  • Complete and file or distribute documentation in a manner that complies with workplace practices

Assessment Tasks
